Book Art

"The book arts consist of those artifacts/objects based on or incorporating the arts and crafts traditionally associated with the book, that is fine printing, papermaking, calligraphy, hand binding, box-making, and paper decorating." (Shelagh Smith,Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild Newsletter, Summer 2001, Vol. 19, No.2.)

The following project was inspired by ancient Chinese art, literature, and calligraphy. I  used various types of paper and experimented with brush and ink to create my own images.

In progress:

This book includes a collection of images, text and objects used to illustrate my interpretation of the shopper and shopping culture with a twist of humor. This short story was written a year ago. "She Could Be Shopping For All We Know!" The identity of the office shopaholic is revealed when she has a public hissy fit over the possibility that one of her office staff may have been shopping during work hours. All this drama and more.

The original content of this book was about knowing who you are, the process of learning how to take control of your life and influencing others. But as I added and changed the look, it started to take on a new meaning and image.
The art of altering books has given me the opportunity to experiment with design ideas and composition through mixing and matching various materials.

New Ideas and Surprising Results

I've already made numerous changes to this project by adding and subtracting textures, text, and colors. It's a collage of images spontaneously put together.

Materials used are: images from magazines, photocopies of my own photographs, craft materials, paint and various types of paper to create these pages.
